What do the mountains mean to us? Every time we say, “The mountains are calling”, the other side of the coin resonates with, “The mountains are falling”. What kind of process turns an abode of solace into a space full of uncertainties and losses? The linguistic context in describing mountains has gone through a rapid change. ‘Raging’ has replaced previously used adjectives like ‘meandering’, ‘calm’ and ‘peaceful’. The youngest, largest and highest mountains in the world, the Himalaya, are presently faced with existential crises, affecting every kind of life that calls it its home. Who is responsible for this? How did we get here? Who is bearing the consequences of this unprecedented shift?
What is the art for?
Pahar Aur Hum is an 8 day workshop looking into ecological, cultural, social and political dynamics and threats currently operating in the Himalaya. We will learn from initiatives that have contributed to this public discourse for the last many decades and explore the history of our collective heritage through discussions, lectures and group assignments . Resource persons include historians, anthropologists, social and cultural activists from the region.Participants, age 20 to 35, who work and live in the Himalayan regions come together and assess the present situation and share vision to work together for a better future.The program will be held at Sambhaavnaa Institute of Public Policy and Politics in February 21-28, 2022.
We invite design/art that will be used as a poster for the ‘Call for Applications’ for the workshop. Please send your entries by November 28, 2021. Selected work will be used for social media outreach and prints will be exhibited during the workshop. One artist/illustrator/graphic designer will be invited to attend the workshop with our resource persons and facilitators, here at Sambhaavnaa in Himachal Pradesh.

पहाड़, क्या मायने रखते हैं हमारी जिंदगी में? एक तरफ हम कहते हैं की “पहाड़ हमें बुला रहे हैं” तो दूसरी तरफ वही “पहाड़ दरकते जा रहे हैं”! आखिर कैसे देखते ही देखते सुकून देने वाली जगह बदल जाती है अस्थिरता और विनाश के घर में? पहाड़ों की कहानी की पूरी भाषा ही तेजी से बदली है। शांत, निर्मल और घुमावदार नहीं अब गुस्सैल और खतरनाक जैसे विशेषण यहां के लिए इस्तेमाल होते हैं। दुनिया के सबसे बड़े, ऊँचे और सबसे जवान पहाड़, हिमालय और यहाँ रहने वाले हर जीव का आज अस्तित्व ही संकट में है। आखिर इस स्थिति के लिए कौन ज़िम्मेदार है और कैसे हम यहाँ पहुंचे? कौन उठा रहा है इस संकट का बोझ?
किसके लिए?
‘पहाड़ और हम’ एक 8 दिवसीय कार्यशाला है जिसमें हिमालयी क्षेत्र के सामाजिक, आर्थिक, राजनीतिक मुद्दों पर साझा मंथन और आत्मनिरीक्षण होता है। ये एक ऐसा सफ़र है जिसमें चर्चा, संवाद, समूह कार्य के जरिये प्रतिभागी – पहाड़ों के युवा साथी – अपनी साझी और अनोखी विरासत को तलाशने के अलावा बदलाव की ओर चल रहे अनेक प्रयासों को समझने और आंकने की कोशिश करेंगे। इस प्रक्रिया में सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक, राजनैतिक कार्यकर्ताओं के अलावा, इतिहासकार और शोधकर्ता स्रोत व्यक्ति के रूप में शामिल होंगे। कार्यशाला हिमाचल प्रदेश के जिला कांगड़ा में स्थित संभावना संस्थान में 21 से 28 फरवरी 2022 को आयोजित की जाएगी।
हम ‘पहाड़ और हम’ कार्यशाला के पोस्टर के लिए चित्रकला का आवेदन कर रहे हैं। आप अपनी कला नवंबर 28, 2021 तक भेजें। चुने गये पोस्टर कार्यशाला की पब्लिसिटी करने के लिए इस्तेमाल किये जाने के अलावा एक प्रदर्शनी में भी शामिल किये जायेंगे। एक कलाकार/ इलस्ट्रेटर को कार्यशाला में भाग लेने के लिए आमंत्रित किया जाएगा।
