The back water of the Larji Project extends up to Aut and beyond till the confluence of Sainj and Tirthan rivers at Larji village. The deference between the color of the two rivers is indicative of the absence/ presence of construction activities going on in the two valleys. While the clear turquoise blue waters of The Tirthan show that there is little siltation upstream, the turbid waters of the Sainj speaks about the volume of silt coming into the stream as a result of heavy construction for hydro power projects. The Himdhara Team put together a photo exhibition for the India River’s Week 2014 titled ‘Disappearing Lifelines of India’s Hydro State’. The exhibition highlights the impacts of operations, under-construction and planned Hydro projects in the five river basins of Himachal Pradesh. Himachal Pradesh is India’s largest hydropower producing state and has a planned potential of about 23000 MW. The costs of this development are being borne by the Himalayan River Basins.
