Background:
What do the mountains mean to us? Every time we say, “The mountains are calling”, the other side of the coin resonates with, “The mountains are falling”. What kind of process turns an abode of solace into a scape full of uncertainties and losses? The linguistic context in describing mountains has gone through a rapid change. ‘Raging’ has replaced previously used adjectives like ‘meandering’, ‘calm’ and ‘peaceful’. The youngest, largest and highest mountains in the world, the Himalaya, are presently faced with existential crises, affecting every kind of life that calls it its home. Who is responsible for this? How did we get here? Who is bearing the consequences of this unprecedented shift?
The context of this ‘loss’ is historically situated in our feudal, colonial past as well as post-colonial, independent India, more so the ‘developing’ India, in which the hill states remained largely at the margins even as they were exploited. The narrative of this ‘loss’ also includes the struggles for the assertion of the separate identity of hill states from Kashmir to the North East of the country, at different periods of time, in varied forms. Young people have been part of many of these struggles, which had strong dimensions of economic and socio-cultural identity, apart from the political one.
As the landscape changes drastically in the race for more economic growth, how do youth from the mountains see these issues today? How do we respond to these challenges with their global dimensions? Are the youth feeling more alienated from the mountain culture and history than ever before? Are they seeking to understand where they fit in and to reconnect with their land?
The format of the program includes talks, discussions, activities, field visits, theatre, manual labour, open spaces and silence. The key themes that will be explored are:
- Our histories and exploring our collective cultural identity
- Mountain Geology and Ecology-State of our Rivers, Forests, Land and its intersections with society
- Politics of Development – Local, state, national and global
- Re-imagining Mountain Economy and Society
- Conflict Zones in the Himalaya
If you are a young person from the mountains and are looking to explore your ‘Pahari’ identity as well as be a part of a collective journey with other youth to build a perspective on some of the above issues facing the Himalayan region today, then join this program.
About the workshop: In 2013 we initiated a process called ‘Pahar Aur Hum: Rethinking Development in the Himalaya’. A short journey that ties people in one common thread called the ‘Himalaya’. Program after program we have explored our common as well as unique cultural, social, and ecological heritage of the ‘pahars’. We have looked critically at our failures as a society and our struggles to break free from various kinds of oppression. We embark on this journey once again with a new set of fellow travelers from the Himalayan region, irrespective of state and national boundaries.
Who can participate: Individuals of the age group 21 to 35, from (living or/and working in) the Himalayan region. Preference will be given to youth who already work or wish to work with communities/issues in the Himalaya.
Language: This is a big challenge for us. For now, we are able to conduct the workshop primarily in Hindi and English.
Program Contributions: The organizers hope that participants could make a monetary contribution towards registration for the program (please select the option in the application form). If there are participants who need financial support (towards registration or in some cases travel) they could mention so in their application form along with the reason for the same.

पहाड़ और हम 2022: हिमालय के युवाओं के लिए कार्यशाला

पहाड़ क्या मायने रखते हैं हमारी ज़िंदगी में? एक तरफ हम कहते हैं कि “पहाड़ हमें बुला रहे हैं” तो दूसरी तरफ वही “पहाड़ दरकते जा रहे हैं”! आखिर कैसे देखते ही देखते सुकून देने वाली जगह बदल जाती है अस्थिरता और विनाश के घर में? पहाड़ों की कहानी की पूरी भाषा ही तीव्र गति में बदली है। शांत, निर्मल और घुमावदार नहीं अब गुस्सैल और खतरनाक जैसे विशेषण यहां के लिए इस्तेमाल होते हैं। दुनिया के सबसे बड़े, ऊँचे और सबसे जवान पहाड़, हिमालय और यहाँ रहने वाले हर जीव का आज अस्तित्व ही संकट में है। आखिर कौन ज़िम्मेदार है इस स्थिति के लिए और कैसे पहुंचे हम यहाँ? कौन उठा रहा है इस संकट का बोझ?
इसका सन्दर्भ ऐतिहासिक है – सामंतवादी और अंग्रेजों के दौर से हो कर आज़ाद भारत, विकासशील भारत तक, जिसमें पहाड़ी क्षेत्रों की अनदेखी हुई है और शोषण भी। और इसीलिए भारत के पहाड़ी क्षेत्रों के इतिहास में अलग राज्य और अलग पहचान का संघर्ष भी शामिल हैं। इन संघर्षों में, जिनमें पहाड़ी युवा भी शामिल थे, केवल राजनीतिक पहचान का नहीं बल्कि आर्थिक, सामाजिक सांस्कृतिक और अस्मिता का सवाल जुड़ा था और अभी भी बरकरार है।
जहां एक तरफ तो यह इलाका अनोखी जैव विविधता ,संस्कृति और राजनीति की जन्म स्थली रहा है, वहीं दूसरी तरफ आज के दौर में यहां के युवाओं का अपनी भूमि से अलगाव बढ़ रहा है। आज के पहाड़ी युवा कैसे देखते हैं हिमालय का इतिहास और वर्तमान? क्या शोषणकारी ढांचों में खुद को फसा हुआ पाते हैं – इस इलाके के स्वरूप के बदल जाने से अलग-थलग हो जाते हैं?
कार्यशाला के बारे में – 2013 में हमने ‘पहाड़ और हम’ नाम की एक प्रक्रिया आरम्भ की थी। एक ऐसा सफ़र जो लोगों को एक धागे में बाँधने का प्रयास है – वो है ‘हिमालय’। ‘पहाड़ और हम’ की हर कार्यशाला में हमने अपनी साझी और अनोखी सांस्कृतिक, सामाजिक और पारिस्थितिकीय ‘पहाड़ी’ विरासत को तलाशने की कोशिश की है। हमने अपने समाज की आंतरिक असफलताओं को गहराई से समझने और उनपे सवाल उठाने का काम किया और अन्याय और उत्पीडन से मुक्त होने के लिए हमारे अनेक संघर्षों को बांटा है। 2022 में हम फिर मिल रहें हैं, हिमालयी क्षेत्र से नए यात्रियों के साथ, चाहे किसी देश या प्रांत से हो। कार्यशाला में चर्चा, समूह कार्य, श्रम दान, नाटक आदि का प्रयोग किया जाएगा और निम्न विषयों पर बातचीत होगी:
-हमारा इतिहास, साझी विरासत और पहचान
-पहाड़ का भूगोल और पारिस्थितिकी- जल, जंगल, ज़मीन कि दशा
-विकास कि राजनीति- स्थानीय, राज्य- राष्ट्रीय और वैश्विक स्तर पर
-पहाड़ी अर्थव्यवस्था और समाज कि पुनर्कल्पना
-हिमालयी क्षेत्रों में विवाद और संघर्ष
अगर आप हिमालयी क्षेत्र में रहने, काम करने वाले साथी हैं और यह सवाल आपके लिए महत्वपूर्ण हैं तो आइये, पहाड़ और हम कार्यक्रम में भाग लीजिये। यह कार्यक्रम एक मौक़ा है, पहाड़ के आज के सवालों पर समझ बनाने और अपनी पहाड़ी पहचान को एक साझा संवाद के माध्यम से खोजने की।
कौन भाग ले सकते है – 21 से 35 साल के हिमालय क्षेत्र में रहने वाले व्यक्ति जो सामाजिक कार्यों में जुड़े हुए हैं या ज़मीनी स्तर पर हिमालय से जुड़ना चाहते हैं।
भाषा – यह हमारे लिए बड़ी चुनौती है। इस वक्त हमारी क्षमता हिंदी और अंग्रेजी में कार्यक्रम करने की है
कार्यशाला की योगदान राशि –आयोजक आशा करते हैं कि कुछ सहयोग राशि कार्यक्रम में पंजीकरण के रूप में अदा करें (कृपया आवेदन पत्र में दिए विकल्प में से चुनें) अगर कोई प्रतिभागी आर्थिक सहयोग चाहते हैं तो (जैसे पंजीकरण राशि या यात्रा खर्च के बारे) आवेदन पत्र में कारण के साथ सूचित कर सकते हैं।
